Most Worshipful John Mason Chambliss, Jr. was born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina on October 6. He graduated from Central of Lunenburg in Victoria, Virginia and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from National College of Business and Technology in Roanoke, Virginia. He began his career with the County of Roanoke in 1973 as Assistant Finance Officer. He served in other management roles including Director of Finance, Assistant County Administrator, and served as the Interim County Administrator from July 2008 through March 2009. He retired in July 2009 with over 38 years of public service.

In his community, Brother Chambliss has served as President and Captain of the Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department; Vice-Chairman of the Western Virginia Regional Jail Authority; Past Chair and member of the Roanoke Valley Juvenile Detention Commission; and Past Director of the Salem- Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce.

Brother Chambliss was raised as a Master Mason in Lakeland Lodge No. 190 on May 2, 1977, and served as Worshipful Master in 1989 and 1990. He also holds membership in Cave Spring Lodge No. 230 and Peyton Randolph Lodge of Research No. 1774. He served as District Deputy Grand Master for Masonic District No. 22 in 1992 and as Grand Purveyor in 1993. He was appointed to the Grand Lodge Committee on Finance in 1992 and served as its Chair from 1998 – 2006. He served on the Board of Governors of the Masonic Home of Virginia from 2004 – 2006. He was elected Grand Senior Deacon in 2006 and serves as the Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of Minas Gerais, Brazil near Virginia. He served as Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 2011 and was elected to the Office of Grand Treasurer in November 2011.

Most Worshipful Brother Chambliss is a member of the Valley of Roanoke, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite and was invested Knight Commander Court of Honor in 1993 and coroneted a 33° Inspector General Honorary in 1999. He is Past High Priest of Murray Chapter No. 22, Royal Arch Masons; Past Commander and Drill Team member of Bayard Commandery No. 15, Knights Templar; Knight York Cross of Honor; Past Governor of Wilderness Road York Rite College No. 94 and recipient of the Order of the Purple Cross; a member of the Divan of Kazim Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S.; Royal Order of Jesters Court No. 59; and Past Chief of the South Atlantic Shrine Provost Association.

Brother Chambliss is married to the former Judy Tomlinson. They are the parents of a son, John Mason Chambliss, III, and wife, Melissa, of Roanoke; and a daughter, Michelle Allen, and her husband, Chris, of Manassas. They have two grandchildren, Abby Allen and Emily Allen. Brother Chambliss serves as Moderator and a Deacon at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church. They make their home in Roanoke, Virginia.
